I’m Donald V. Dunham, though many know me as “the Hermit Author.” My life is simple, grounded, and dedicated to two things: writing books and building gardens. Every book I create doesn’t just put stories or activities in your hands—it directly helps fund real-world projects like community gardens and a future Mushroom House.
My latest project is a children’s book series called “Now I Know What a ___ Is!”. These are not just coloring books. Each one teaches kids about a real insect—what it eats, its role in nature, and whether it’s safe or not safe to handle. Every book includes:
- A bold, friendly cover that grabs kids’ attention.
- A real-life photo of the insect (so children can see the truth behind the drawings).
- 100+ pages of coloring, activities, and fun facts.
- A place for kids to sign their name, age, and date completed.
I chose insects because they are everywhere—backyards, gardens, forests. They fascinate kids, they support ecosystems, and they’re often misunderstood. Teaching children about them through fun books means raising the next generation to respect and protect the world around them.
But here’s the bigger picture: every book sale helps grow gardens. The profits are used to buy soil, seeds, tools, and resources that go straight into community food systems. It’s a loop: books → gardens → healthy families.
What you can expect from me here on BookBub:
- Weekly posts about my books, my process, and the gardens they support.
- Behind-the-scenes looks at upcoming releases.
- Free activities and sneak peeks.
- Straight talk—no fluff, no corporate hype.
If you want books that not only inspire children but also build something real in the world, follow me here on BookBub. Together, we’ll turn pages into plants.
