About Donald V. Dunham

"From a young age, I've been deeply connected to the earth and its bounty. My journey began at the tender age of 7, when I started growing bird seed for my mother's canaries and parakeets. This early experience ignited a passion in me to cultivate more; I realized I could grow food, not just for birds, but for people. However, a pivotal moment came when I found myself deeply troubled after witnessing images of starving children on television. Amidst the despair, I noticed unused land in the background and questioned why it wasn't being transformed into gardens to feed the hungry. This observation sparked a relentless quest within me to understand the complexities of food scarcity. I became committed to the belief that no one should starve in a world where there's land that could be cultivated. This has been the driving force behind my lifelong dedication to exploring sustainable agriculture and finding solutions to hunger."

The Importance of Hands-On Learning for Kids

Learning by Doing

🐞 Why Bugs Belong in Kids’ Books When I started the series “Now I Know What

When I started the series “Now I Know What a ___ Is!”, a lot of people asked me: “Why bugs?”

The answer is simple: bugs are everywhere kids explore — backyards, parks, sidewalks, even windowsills. They’re the first wild creatures children meet. And most of the time, kids are more curious than cautious.

That’s why my books do three things at once:

  • Make insects fun with bold illustrations and coloring pages.
  • Teach kids the role each insect plays in nature.
  • Show clearly which bugs are safe to...
